Annual baseline panel

- Total coliform bacteria. This is a broad indicator that can point to a pathway for contamination. A total-coliform result does not identify the exact source by itself.
- E. coli, if included or if total coliform is present. This is commonly used to help identify contamination associated with human or animal waste. Follow the lab and county health department guidance on a positive result.
- Nitrate. Nitrate can enter groundwater from fertilizer, septic systems, animal waste, and natural sources. EPA’s drinking-water standard for nitrate is 10 mg/L measured as nitrogen. - Total dissolved solids, often called TDS. This is a broad measure of dissolved minerals and salts. It does not identify which mineral is causing the number, but it can help establish a baseline and explain changes in taste or scaling.
Some laboratories package these as an annual private-well panel. Before buying, read the actual analyte list. “Well water test” is a broad label, and two packages at the same price may test for very different things.

Physical wellhead inspection checklist
You do not need to open the well or touch electrical components to do a useful owner inspection. Walk around the outside of the well in daylight, take a few photos, and write down anything that changed since last year. - Check that the well cap is present, snug, and not cracked, bent, or visibly loose. A sanitary cap should keep out insects, small animals, debris, and surface water.
