What causes a rotten-egg smell in well water?

It helps to separate hydrogen sulfide from sulfate. Hydrogen sulfide is a gas that creates the rotten-egg odor. Sulfate is a dissolved mineral that usually has no smell. The two can occur in the same water, but they are not interchangeable and may need different treatment choices.

First, find out where the smell begins

Fill a clean glass with cold water from a faucet that is not near a smelly drain. Step away from the sink and smell the water. Then repeat with hot water after letting it run for a minute.
Next, fill a second clean glass from another part of the house. A bathroom on the other side of the home is useful. This tells you whether the odor follows one fixture or appears throughout the house.
Finally, smell the sink drain itself without running water. Food residue and ordinary drain buildup can make a sink smell sulfurous even when the water in a glass smells fine. Do not let the odor be your only water-safety test
A rotten-egg odor does not tell you whether your water contains coliform bacteria, nitrate, or other contaminants. Water can have a strong odor and still have a clean bacteria result, and water that looks and smells normal can still need attention.
That is why a new or changing odor is a good reason to use a certified laboratory and speak with your county health department about the right local panel. They know which well-water issues are common in your area and what sample collection rules apply. For a bacteria sample, the lab may give you a sterile bottle and a short holding time. Do not use an old jar, and do not collect the sample until you know the lab can receive it.

Match the treatment to the test result
There is no single “sulfur filter” that fits every well. A system that works beautifully for low hydrogen sulfide may clog quickly if your water also has iron bacteria, manganese, sediment, or high hardness. Ask any installer to explain what in your test report their system is designed to address.
Shock chlorination: a temporary reset in some wells
